Afternoon “T” With Nomin

Oh, Nomin. One of the most complex characters in the office. When Nomin first came to TTT, he wowed us with his extensive knowledge of pour over coffee and obscure clothing labels. We had never seen someone with such futuristic shoes. Apart from his unique fashion sense, the guy is hardworking to say the least. Complex problems never seem to deter him and he’s always keen to help out if something breaks down (like the microwave). With punchy spurts of energy, Nomin is both incredibly dependable yet unpredictable in the best way.

Quick intro:

Position: Backend Developer/ Server Team Lead

Favourite game: Risk

Fun fact: I electrocuted myself when I was little

Last movie watched: Love, Death and Robots (Netflix series)

Favourite food: Anything, high preference for soup

Tell us about yourself. What’s your story/background?

“I went to high school in Denver, Colorado and did my undergrad in Seattle, Washington. Denver is quite similar to Seattle – minus the water and bit more sunshine. It has as many sunny days as Southern California! After my undergrad, I moved to Vancouver to do my Masters at UBC and eventually ended up at TTT.”

How did you end up at TTT? First impressions?

“I had previously heard of the company before, and looked into their career options on their website. My first impression was that the office was a very fun, casual, chill atmosphere.”

What are some interesting things about yourself?

“My masters was in an unrelated field to what I do now – building biocompatible microelectrodes for brain computer interfaces. I worked in a fabrication cleanroom, much like one of those you would see from an Intel commercial with people dressed in what look like bunny suits. I also worked in a neuro robotics research lab in Seattle; I learned a lot there. I also speak Mongolian.”

What’s your most memorable moment working at TTT?

“The scavenger hunt last year, and the hackathon. For the hackathon, a couple of us slept over at the office working on our projects, it was pretty fun.”

What is your secret super power? (something you’re very good at, that not everyone knows)

“Making coffee. (Everyone already knows that though). I can cook good food when I’m not being lazy. Roasting birds like chicken or duck is my favourite thing to do right now. I can also eat a bowl of food really quick (I’ve seen him do it) and walk inhumanly fast with a cup of coffee in hand.”

What do you enjoy working on the most?

“Coming up with solutions for new and challenging problems. I prefer to do backend work but I can always trick my mind into tackling any problem, even if it’s not something so interesting or exciting.”

What do you like to do in your free time?

“I like to focus on self improvement – running, swimming, learning new things. I’m currently learning how to program a few things in Python. Aside from that I’ll catch a good movie or show with my friends and enjoy some scene things like natural wine.”

Who do you look up to? (Who is your hero?) Why?

“All the mentors I had previously (my high school physics teacher, lab supervisor, thesis advisor) – people who’ve contributed to my learning and growth. Mama and Papa Nomin as well.”
