We’re extremely happy with TTT’s design team on this project. Within the short time frame of pushing the new design out, we’ve experienced a decrease in returns by 50%.

Say hello to “Snap”

Snap by Sengled is a revolutionary smarthome/IoT lighting system that doubles as an HD security camera. Receive real time notifications on predetermined identifiable objects like bikes, cars, pets and people. Leave your home with the peace of mind of knowing you can monitor your property from anywhere at anytime.

The in-app features include a live monitoring feed from the camera, motion detection of recognized objects triggering automatic snapshots, and a built-in two way audio system.

The challenge

Despite its success overseas, Snap by Sengled was experiencing high return rates in North America. Since most of the returns occurred within a couple of days of purchase, the issue could be narrowed down to the onboarding process. Following this revelation, Sengled North America approached us with the mission of redesigning the onboarding process for the Snap app.

User testing

At first glance, our designers had some ideas on what the issues were with the original UX design based on experience. For one, there weren’t enough peripheral cues to guide the user through the setup process. When an error occurred on the user side, there was no feedback on why the setup failed. It also appears the setup instructions have been directly translated from Chinese to English without giving much thought to language semantics, causing further confusion to an already convoluted set of instructions. In order to validate these assumptions, we conducted user testing.

Our four-step user testing process

1.
Come up with hypotheses on the problematic aspects of the onboarding process.
2.
Draft up a list of onboarding tasks for users to perform during testing.
3.
Conduct user testing on test users, and record the results.
4.
Analyze test results and apply to design.
Too much text was used. Most test users skipped right through the instructions.
Categories and tabs used didn’t make any sense.
Simple tasks were not straightforward or intuitive.

Game-changing design

UX revamp

We redesigned the onboarding process based on the results of the user testing, and also made general improvements to the overall design. We always keep the client involved at this stage, and approached UX with constant two way communication. After agreeing on the wireframes internally, we would send it off to the client for review, and then incorporate their input until we have a version that meets the client’s business objectives.

Interactive prototyping

To allow the client to fully experience the design, we sent over a low-medium fidelity prototype. A couple of changes were also applied during this stage according to Sengled’s request. Once the UX has been set, we then looked at applying Sengled branding guidelines to high fidelity UI.

Results

After conducting extensive user testing, analyzing the feedback, and revamping the UX and UI for the Snap app, we implemented a design that was clear, easy to use, and intuitive decreasing Sengled’s Snap returns by 50%.
